This is the true story of the Marines of MIKE 3/5 in Vietnam, 4 September 1967.Marine Lance Corporal Jack Swan crested the face of a bare, rocky knoll in the Que Son Valley of South Vietnam. Following Swan were the 164 Marines of Mike Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division. This is an incredible, intense book. The descriptions of the battle action are as descriptive and real as being there. The sacrifice and valor of these young men, in spite of them being outnumbered, hampered by inferior equipment, is a great capture of the American Marine spirit. The author does an incredible job of describing the impact of the battle, and one feels like they are witnessing the battle in person. The sad loss of life, and the later tribute to their fallen brothers leaves a tremendous affect on the reader. Although sad, I loved it. The Aftermath leaves a good taste in how the survivors went on in life. This battle of the "Knoll" or Operation Swift is by far the most moving. The author does an excellent job of recounting the bravery every Marine exhibited on that fateful day and night. The heroism, courage and even compassion demonstrated by those who battled there keeps you turning the pages and hoping for relief to show up. Battling superior numbers of NVA, and struggling with M16s that jammed relentlessly, the battle demonstrated the shear determination of Marines to battle their enemy and defend their fellow Marines.The author introduces the reader to many of the key players bringing each Marine to life in the reader's mind. He then recounts the stages of the battle. The author places you right there on the knoll along side of the Marines as he describes the struggles and the wounds. You picture the bomb craters where many Marines sought cover and where many of the wounded lay waiting for evacuation from the battlefield. You can almost hear the explosions and cacophony of sounds from combat. You can hear the shouted commands and imagine the fear each person must have felt as he watched the increasing numbers of NVA continuing to approach the perimeter.I highly recommend this book, but be forewarned! You will have a difficult time putting it down once you start reading this amazing story. The losses suffered are heartbreaking and totally irresponsible. I have no idea how this nation could have sent our young men out in the field knowing the inherent dangers and risks to our men. If as a parent reading this book, I would certainly be very bitter knowing that problems existed with the m-16, at the time. How many Marines died because of this problem? The author relates how a Colonel came out to do an assessment of the weapon and determined that the problem was associated with Marines not keeping their weapon clean. I hope there is a place in hell for this "yes man" ! This is not what the Marine Corps is about and the situation was allowed to continue until Dec 1967, when the problem was finally fixed. I would hope every Marine endeavoring to become an Officer of Marines should be required to read this book!! I highly recommend this book.
